Sony Ericsson W810i

UNDER CONSTRUCTION….

After years of Nokia phones, each one more disappointing than the last despite new features, I jumped ship to Sony Ericsson. To upgrade to the W810i would cost just 30quid, the nearest Nokia equivalent is 130 quid.
My requirements were;

  • Radio
  • MP3 player
  • “Good” camera
  • Web and email access
  • Be able to migrate address book from Nokia 6630i to new phone (via PC is fine)
  • Make and receive phone calls :)

The W810i easily meets these criteria: RDS radio with 20 presets, MP3 player with 512Mb memory card, 2MP camera with autofocus, flash and digital zoom and some PC software to back up and restore contacts.

First impressions: Looks great, buttons for walkman mode are a nice feature, similar for taking pictures. Small and light. Before the phone was activated I played the demos that are supplied on the phone, these were useful. Everything worked as expected (or better) except the supplied PC software…..
Following the instructions I uninstalled the Nokia software and then installed the SE software. I could see the memory card just fine but the synchronization software just wouldnt recognise the phone. Uninstall and install again. Same problem. Rinse and repeat several times. The Orange website was no help, in fact it was worse than useless and I wasted some more time installing some synchronization software that I didn’t need (and didn’t work anyway). Finally, I gave up. Without this software I couldn’t migrate the phone contacts and I didn’t want to type in over 100 of them manually. Reluctantly I phoned Orange and asked them to cancel the new phone. The lady was sympathetic and suggested that I let her put me through to Orange Tech Support. I agreed. Orange Tech Support told me they dont support SE phones and I would I like their number. No thanks. I decided to have lunch before calling Orange again to cancel the order. After lunch I had calmed down enough to find the SE tech Support number and call them. The guy was superb. We diagnosed that the COM port was disabled (probably because pf the old Nokia software) and he advised to run regvac. I did this, regvac removed a whopping 1342 entries from the registry and my PC and phone could talk to each other. Uploading the Outlook Express format address book was then easy. Hurrah for good support!
