I use a retired London Taxi for driving around Orkney. It is a London Carbodies FX4S Plus built in 1988. The mileage is unknown since a previous owner reset the clock when the engine was reconditioned/replaced. This particular model is not exactly speedy, the 2.5 litre diesel engine struggles to reach above 60mph and I don't normally go over 50mph (consequently the journey from Cambridge to Scrabster on the Scottish coast took 17 hours). The brakes could be better, it could handle the the bends and hills of Orkney better and it could be a bit more waterproof than it is. Still, it is very reliable and I love the tight turning circle of it. I believe it is the only vehicle of it's kind in Orkney. These 3 pictures taken outside one of the Martello towers on Hoy. These pictures were taken on a beautiful Monday afternoon in November just after a force 10 wind had blown all weekend. |

The taxi has been used in a number of weddings on the island and is seen here in it's wedding regalia. Taxi Links:Ray's Taxis (where I bought this one from) |
